Part 2 — The Truth Comes Out
A wave of whispers moved through the cabin.
“14C?” someone said.
“That’s coach.”
The man tried to explain himself.
“There must be some mistake.”
Kimberly shook her head.
“There is no mistake. Your boarding pass says 14C. Seat 3A belongs to this child.”
Amani stood quietly beside Lorraine.
The man still refused to move.
“I paid for this flight,” he argued.
“So did everyone else,” Lorraine replied.
Another passenger spoke from behind them.
“He took the seat before I could even say anything.”
Kimberly contacted security.
The man’s face became pale.
“You’re calling security over a seat?”
“No,” Kimberly said. “We’re calling security because you refuse to follow the crew’s instructions.”
Finally, he stood.
But as he gathered his belongings, something slipped from his jacket and fell onto the floor.
Lorraine picked it up.
She looked at it carefully.
Then she looked toward the back of the plane.
“Is this yours?”
A man raised his hand.
“Yes! That’s mine. I lost it at the gate.”
Everyone went silent.
The situation suddenly made sense.
The man in 3A hadn’t simply sat in the wrong seat.
He had taken someone else’s upgrade information and used it to get into first class.
Then he had tried to keep a ten-year-old girl from taking the seat that actually belonged to her.
Security arrived moments later.
The man was escorted from the plane.
The cabin finally became quiet again.
Amani slowly walked to seat 3A.
She placed her hand on the armrest.
It was finally hers.
Kimberly crouched beside her.
“I’m sorry, Amani. You shouldn’t have had to go through that.”
Amani looked up at her.
Then she asked something that made the entire moment feel much bigger than a seat dispute.
“Why do adults act like that when they know they’re wrong?”
