“What did you discover?”
“Almost nothing. His business records were legitimate, his investments were real, and there were no obvious criminal charges. But the investigator found something strange.”
Helen took a breath.
“Daniel had been engaged before.”
I stared at the wall.
“To whom?”
“A woman named Laura Mitchell. She was thirty-eight when they became engaged. The relationship ended suddenly, and shortly afterward, she disappeared from public life.”
“Disappeared?”
“That’s what the investigator wrote. He couldn’t find a current address or determine what had happened to her.”
I gripped my phone.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I couldn’t establish that anything improper had happened. I didn’t want to accuse your husband of something I couldn’t prove.”
I closed my eyes.
Another woman.
Another relationship.
And possibly another medical mystery.
“Can you send me everything the investigator found?”
“I already did. Check your email.”
When I opened the message, I found a short report containing Laura’s photograph, her former occupation, and the name of the hospital where she had once worked.
