Part 4: The Woman Who Knew My Husband Before Me
The next morning, I woke before Daniel and called my sister.
Helen answered immediately.
“Margaret? Is everything all right?”
“No,” I whispered. “And I need you to listen carefully before you say anything.”
I told her about the strange drink, the laboratory report, and the documents Dr. Reeves had shown me.
She remained silent for several seconds.
Then she said something I wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Margaret, I need to tell you something about Daniel.”
My heart sank.
“What?”
“Before your wedding, I hired someone to check his background.”
I sat up.
“You did what?”
“I know you’re angry, but please let me explain. I wasn’t trying to ruin your happiness. I was worried because everything happened so quickly, and he refused to introduce us to anyone from his past.”
I remembered the questions Helen had asked during the months before our wedding. At the time, I’d dismissed them as jealousy.
