I wiped my eyes.
“I spent thirty-eight years teaching children to ask questions when something didn’t make sense. Somehow, I forgot to follow my own advice.”
Dr. Reeves gave me a sympathetic look.
“Trusting someone you love isn’t a crime, Mrs. Bennett. If someone exploited that trust, the responsibility belongs to them.”
I gathered the documents and placed them inside my handbag.
Before leaving, I asked him one final question.
“Why would Daniel marry me if he was planning to use me for research?”
He didn’t pretend to know the answer.
But as I reached the door, he said something that followed me all the way home.
“Sometimes, Mrs. Bennett, the most important question isn’t why someone chose you. It’s what they believed you could give them.”
That afternoon, I returned to the mansion determined to act normally until I understood what I was dealing with.
Daniel greeted me with a kiss and asked about my day.
