Then I found a document containing Daniel’s name beside a column labeled FINANCIAL INTEREST.
The amount listed beneath it was more money than I’d ever earned during my entire teaching career.
I pushed the papers away.
“Dr. Reeves, I need to know what was in that drink.”
He nodded.
“The preliminary report identifies a compound that warrants further investigation. But it doesn’t establish the exact substance, the amount you consumed, or whether it caused your symptoms. We need more testing.”
“Then how can you help me?”
“First, we’ll arrange an independent medical examination. Second, you should preserve every document you have and avoid taking anything else that hasn’t been prescribed or independently verified by a qualified clinician.”
He paused.
“And Margaret, if you believe someone may be deliberately exposing you to an unknown substance, you should stay somewhere safe and contact the appropriate authorities.”
For the first time that morning, someone had spoken to me as though I were capable of making my own decisions.
