PART 2 — WHEN THE WORLD SAID NO
Their relationship quickly attracted attention.
Some people stared when they walked together. Others whispered behind their backs. A few people were not afraid to tell them directly that their relationship would never work.
James tried to stay strong, but sometimes the words hurt.
Margaret had difficult conversations with people she had known her entire life. Some friends stopped calling. Some relatives questioned her choices.
One evening, after a particularly painful argument, Margaret sat beside James in his car and began to cry.
She told him that maybe everyone was right.
Maybe their lives were too different.
Maybe they were making things harder than they needed to be.
James didn’t argue with her.
He simply took her hand and said, “I don’t know what tomorrow will bring. But I know I don’t want to spend tomorrow without you.”
Margaret looked at him through her tears.
And she made her decision.
She stayed.
But their biggest test was still ahead.
