Back then, I called it a difficult marriage.
Now I wondered what Julian had absorbed from watching us. I remembered him sitting silently at the dinner table while Robert criticized my cooking, clothing, and opinions.
I also remembered how often I had apologized simply to restore peace.
But understanding where Julian might have learned harmful behavior did not excuse his choices. He was an adult, responsible for what he had done to his wife.
Several weeks later, Julian called from his attorney’s office. He wanted me to withdraw my statement and persuade Clara to reconcile. He insisted that the entire situation had been misunderstood.
“Mom, you know I’m not a monster,” he said. “I’ve worked hard my whole life. Are you really going to let one bad night destroy everything I’ve built?”
I answered quietly. “It wasn’t one bad night, Julian.”
He fell silent.
“Clara told the investigators about the other nights,” I continued. “And I saw what happened. I will not pretend otherwise simply because acknowledging it hurts.”
