During our divorce hearing, my husband laughed in front of the judge and called me his “pack mule,” claiming I’d contributed nothing to the restaurant we spent twenty years building.

For a moment, I could hear nothing except the sound of my own breathing.

I had not seen that document in almost twenty years.

Victor had told me it had been destroyed when the restaurant burned.

Apparently, he had kept a copy.

The judge examined the signatures.

“Mr. Hale, is this your signature?”

Victor stared at the page.

“I don’t recall signing that.”

“Your signature is directly beneath the ownership provisions.”

“I signed hundreds of documents when we opened the business.”

“And you are denying this one?”

Richard Cole leaned toward his client and whispered something urgently.

Victor shook his head.

“I am saying the document is outdated.”

“Outdated is not the same as invalid,” the judge replied.

Then Grace rose once more.

“Your Honor, there is one additional document. We believe it explains why my client was pressured to accept responsibility for the fire, why her name disappeared from the business records, and why Mr. Hale has spent years insisting that she was never his partner.”
