“What did she want?”
“She wanted to come back.” He laughed a little. It wasn’t a happy laugh. “She said she’d made a terrible mistake. She said Michael was never the man she thought he was. She said she realized I was the only person who ever really loved her. She said she’d do anything. Counseling. Church. She
said she’d changed.”
“What did you say?”
He was quiet on the line for a moment.
“I asked her one question,” he said. “I asked her, If Michael had called you tonight and asked you to come back, would you be sitting in my kitchen right now?“
“And?”
“And she didn’t answer,” Tom said. “She just sat there. For a long time. And then she got up and she left.”
“I’m sorry, Tom.”
“Don’t be. It was the answer I needed.” He sighed. “You know what the worst part is? I really did love her. I really did. I thought if I loved her enough, she’d stop wanting what everybody else had. I thought I could be enough.”
