“A little,” I said. I sat down on the couch next to her. “But I’m going to be okay. We all are.”
She leaned her head against my shoulder. We watched the snowman movie. Outside, the rain kept falling.
The roses stayed on the porch railing for three days until the wind blew them away.
Rachel came crawling back too. She came in February.
She didn’t come to my door. She went to Tom’s.
I know this because Tom called me afterward. We’d been talking once in a while since the party.
Just short phone calls. Checking in. Two people who’d been through the same explosion, comparing notes on the damage.
“She showed up at the house on Saturday,” Tom said. “Knocked on the door. I didn’t open it at
first. Then she sat down on the front steps and started crying. It was twenty degrees out. I finally let her in so she wouldn’t freeze.”
