But I understood why it mattered.
On the fourth day after surgery, Dr. Patel came into my room carrying a folder.
Michael was beside me.
The doctor sat down.
“We have received the final pathology report.”
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
She smiled gently.
“The mass was a benign serous cystadenoma. There was no evidence of cancer in the tissue we examined.”
I stared at her.
“No cancer?”
“That’s correct. The findings are reassuring.”
Michael covered his face with his hands.
For several seconds, he could not speak.
Then he began to cry.
I reached for him.
“Oh, darling.”
He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against my hand.
“I thought I was going to lose you.”
I stroked his hair as I had when he was a little boy.
“I’m still here.”
Dr. Patel explained that the mass had been removed and that I would need postoperative follow-up, but the pathology results meant I did not require cancer treatment for this lesion.
