At 76, I Was Too Ashamed to Take off My Bathrobe at the Community Pool After My DIL Laughed at My Body – Then My Granddaughter Asked Her One Question That Made Her Go Red

“Sophie, go back in the water.”

There was something in her voice I’d never heard before. It wasn’t annoyance. It was fear.

And suddenly, I wasn’t thinking about my swimsuit anymore.

“Show me your phone.”

Amanda pulled it closer. “No.”

“Did you take a picture of me this morning?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Show me your phone.”

“Then show me. Prove me wrong, Amanda.”

Sophie stepped closer to my chair.

“I saw the others too, Grandma.”

Amanda turned sharply. “Sophie. Be quiet!”

I looked at my granddaughter. “Where?”

“On Mom’s phone. I was taking pictures of Cooper.”

“I saw the others too, Grandma.”

Cooper was their new puppy, and Sophie had spent most of the week filling Amanda’s phone with blurry pictures of his ears.

“Sophie, that’s enough,” Amanda hissed.

“But I saw Grandma.”

I kept my eyes on Sophie. “What did you see?”

“Pictures of you. And Mom said something about sending them to her ladies. I heard her talking to Auntie Ana on speaker.”

“What did you see?”

Amanda looked away.

“You misunderstood.”

Sophie shook her head. “You said they thought it was funny.”

That was enough.

“Give me the phone, Amanda.”

“No.”

“You said they thought it was funny.”

Yvonne had started toward us.

Amanda looked at her. “Please don’t.”

Yvonne stopped beside my chair. “Amanda, what did you send?”

Before she could answer, Sophie reached for the phone.

Amanda pulled back.

“Don’t.”

The screen was still unlocked.
