At 76, I Was Too Ashamed to Take off My Bathrobe at the Community Pool After My DIL Laughed at My Body – Then My Granddaughter Asked Her One Question That Made Her Go Red

“Somebody has to watch the towels.”

I knew them. Yvonne and Jillian were mothers Amanda often met for coffee and weekend lunches.

My face grew hot.

“I just feel more comfortable covered.”

Amanda leaned back.

“Probably for the best. Some things aren’t meant for public display.”

I turned to her.

“That wasn’t necessary, Amanda.”

“I just feel more comfortable covered.”

She shrugged. “I’m just saying what people notice.”

“No. You’re saying what you notice.”

Her eyebrows lifted.

For once, I didn’t take it back.

Amanda glanced toward Yvonne and Jillian.

“Great. Now she thinks I’ve upset you.”

“I’m just saying what people notice.”

“You have.”

Amanda stared at me.

I looked toward Sophie instead.

A minute later, she climbed out and hurried over, dripping across the concrete.

“Grandma, why aren’t you swimming?”

I looked at her.

Sophie studied my face, then turned toward Amanda.

“Grandma, why aren’t you swimming?”

“Mom, is Grandma sad because of the photos you send to your ladies?”

Amanda’s hand closed around her phone.

Her face went red.

I stopped breathing for a second.

“What photos?”

“Sophie doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”

I stopped breathing for a second.

“Yes, I do.”

“Sophie, go back in the water.”

“But I saw pictures of Grandma yesterday. And I saw another one today.”

Amanda sat up sharply.

I held out my hand.

“What picture?”

“Linda.”
