The report described a severely abnormal semen analysis and recommended follow-up testing with a fertility specialist.
There was also a letter from a doctor explaining that Michael needed further evaluation before any conclusions could be drawn about his fertility.
The report did not prove that he was permanently infertile.
But it proved something equally important.
He had sought medical advice about his fertility six years earlier.
And he had never told me.
I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the papers.
Rebecca took the report from my hands.
“Oh, Sarah.”
I could barely breathe.
“Six years,” I whispered. “He knew there might be a problem six years ago.”
“Maybe he was ashamed.”
“Then why did he keep blaming me?”
Rebecca had no answer.
I searched the envelope again.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
It was in Michael’s handwriting.
The message was short.
I cannot let her find out. If she knows, she’ll look at me differently. I have to keep her believing this is her problem.
