I nodded.
“I want to know the truth.”
“Then let’s focus on what can be established. Your medical care comes first. If your husband has a fertility concern, that would need to be assessed separately.”
I left the clinic feeling frightened but determined.
That afternoon, Rebecca accompanied me home while Michael was at work so I could collect some clothes and important documents.
I thought we would be in and out within fifteen minutes.
Then I remembered the bottle I had found in his desk.
I went upstairs and opened the drawer.
The bottle was gone, but underneath a stack of old paperwork I discovered a sealed envelope with the name of a fertility clinic printed on the front.
The date was from six years earlier.
My hands began to shake.
I opened it.
Inside was a laboratory report addressed to Michael.
I read the first page twice before the words began to make sense.
