Now I was the one who felt trapped.
That night, I slept in a guest room.
I did not close my eyes until sunrise.
The following morning, Margaret behaved as though nothing had happened. She ate breakfast, reviewed documents with her assistant, and asked the housekeeper to arrange my belongings in a separate dressing room.
I sat across from her at the breakfast table, exhausted and furious.
“You can’t expect me to live like this.”
She calmly buttered a piece of toast.
“Like what?”
“Like a prisoner.”
“Then stop behaving like one.”
I stared at her.
She set down her knife.
“Daniel, I have no intention of forcing you to pretend to love me. You agreed to a marriage of convenience, and I accepted your terms as I understood them. You wanted financial security. I wanted companionship and someone who could be honest with me. We have both discovered that the arrangement is more complicated than we imagined.”
