I could barely breathe.
“You tricked me.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“No, Daniel. I gave you an opportunity to understand the arrangement. My lawyer told you to read the agreement. You chose not to.”
“You knew I wanted money!”
“Of course I knew. I wanted to see whether you were capable of being honest about it. Instead, you allowed your imagination to do all the work.”
I threw the document onto the bed.
“You set a trap for me!”
Margaret stood.
“And you walked into it willingly.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she delivered the words I would remember for the rest of my life.
“You married me because you thought I was old enough to die before you ran out of patience. Now you are angry because I refuse to make your plan easy.”
I felt something inside me collapse.
I had wanted to escape poverty by taking advantage of an elderly woman’s wealth.
