THE CROWD CHOSE A SIDE
The man finally stood.
His wife followed.
Neither said a word.
But Grandpa still didn’t sit down.
“The match is beginning,” he said.
“I don’t want everyone missing it because of me.”
A steward arrived after hearing the commotion.
He looked at the tickets.
Then at Grandpa.
Then at the man who had taken the seat.
Within minutes, several supporters were offering their own seats.
One couple sitting closer to the front shifted over.
Another supporter offered to move so Grandpa could have more room.
The steward finally arranged even better places for Grandpa and me.
As we walked toward them, I looked back.
The entitled man and his family were returning to their original row.
Nobody had thrown them out.
Nobody had shouted at them.
Their punishment was simpler.
They had watched an entire section of strangers choose the person they had treated as worthless.
Grandpa settled into his new seat.
Brandon sat nearby.
And somehow, the whole atmosphere changed.
