AN ENTITLED MAN TOOK MY 92-YEAR-OLD GRANDPA’S SEATS AT A FOOTBALL MATCH BECAUSE “HE WOULDN’T REMEMBER IT ANYWAY” — FIVE MINUTES LATER, KARMA STRUCK HIM HARD

 TWO STRANGERS BECOME FRIENDS

When the whistle sounded, Grandpa leaned forward like a man twenty years younger.

“Look at that formation,” he whispered.

Brandon smiled.

“My grandfather used to say the same thing.”

Grandpa turned toward him.

“Did he?”

“All the time.”

“Then your grandfather knew football.”

Brandon laughed.

“So did mine.”

For the next twenty minutes, the two of them talked as though they had known each other for years.

Grandpa explained every movement on the pitch.

Brandon challenged him.

Grandpa disagreed.

Brandon laughed.

I sat between them, watching something I hadn’t expected to see.

A ninety-two-year-old man and a teenage boy.

Two generations.

Two strangers.

Connected by a football club and one old captain’s armband.

Then I noticed Brandon’s father.

He was sitting several rows behind us.

He wasn’t watching the match.

He was watching his son.

And for the first time that afternoon, he looked ashamed.
