THE LAST WHISTLE
After the final whistle, the crowd slowly began leaving.
Grandpa remained seated.
He looked exhausted.
But happy.
I helped him stand.
He leaned on his cane.
Then he noticed an empty paper cup near his shoe.
He picked it up.
“Trash can on the way?”
I laughed through my tears.
“You are ninety-two years old, and you’re still cleaning the stadium.”
He smiled.
“A real fan leaves the game better than he found it.”
Brandon crouched down and picked up two more cups.
“Like this?”
Grandpa nodded approvingly.
“Exactly.”
Together, the three of us walked toward the exit.
Grandpa leaned on his cane.
I walked beside him.
Brandon followed with the captain’s armband wrapped around his sleeve.
Behind us, the stadium lights slowly began shutting down.
The match was over.
But something much more important had happened.
