AN ENTITLED MAN TOOK MY 92-YEAR-OLD GRANDPA’S SEATS AT A FOOTBALL MATCH BECAUSE “HE WOULDN’T REMEMBER IT ANYWAY” — FIVE MINUTES LATER, KARMA STRUCK HIM HARD

 THE APOLOGY

The man looked at his son.

“I was trying to give you what I thought was the best seat.”

Brandon frowned.

“You took someone else’s.”

“I know.”

“You said Grandpa wouldn’t remember it.”

The man lowered his head.

“I shouldn’t have said that.”

Grandpa interrupted gently.

“Your son remembers.”

The man looked at Brandon.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“He does.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Grandpa extended his hand.

The man looked surprised.

But he shook it.

“I hope,” Grandpa said, “that you remember this day for the right reason.”

The man nodded.

“I will.”

Then he looked at Brandon.

“I’m sorry.”

Brandon didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he held out the armband.

His father stared at it.

“Go ahead,” Brandon said.

His father touched the faded cloth.

But he didn’t take it.

“Keep it,” he said.

“You’ve earned it.”

For the first time that day, Brandon smiled at his father.

And somehow, that felt like the real victory.
