Then the elevator doors opened.
Megan stepped out.
She was wearing a different outfit from the one she’d worn on the airplane, and her hair was loose around her shoulders.
She looked relaxed.
Almost happy.
I stood behind a large decorative plant, feeling ridiculous for hiding in a hotel lobby like a character in a cheap detective movie.
Then Ryan appeared.
He walked toward her carrying two cups of coffee.
She smiled when she saw him.
He handed her one cup, brushed a strand of hair away from her face, and kissed her.
Right there.
In the middle of the lobby.
As if the rest of the world didn’t exist.
I heard Megan laugh.
“You’re going to get us caught.”
Ryan smiled.
“Relax. Nobody here knows us.”
My stomach turned.
Nobody here knew them.
But I did.
I knew the man who had promised to love me in front of our families.
