Helen smiled sadly.
“Then perhaps she’s right.”
The DNA results arrived twelve days later.
I opened the envelope in Richard’s study, with Margaret sitting beside me and Helen connected through a video call from her hospital room.
Richard had invited everyone to be present, but he had made it clear that I could open the results privately if I preferred.
I wanted them all there.
My hands shook as I unfolded the pages.
I read the conclusion once.
Then again.
The results confirmed that Richard Harrison and Margaret Harrison were my biological grandparents.
I couldn’t speak.
Margaret began crying before I had even finished reading.
Richard covered his face with both hands.
Helen, watching through the screen, pressed a tissue against her mouth.
For several minutes, the only sounds in the room were sobs and the soft ticking of the grandfather clock.
Then Richard stood and walked toward me.
He stopped a few feet away.
