Helen hesitated.
“Not at first. We called you Emily because it was the name you seemed to respond to. You had said something that sounded like Emmy, but the hospital staff couldn’t establish whether it was your name or a nickname.”
I remembered Margaret’s voice.
My little Emmy.
I covered my face.
Helen reached for my hand.
“After the adoption, we received a letter from an official explaining that some additional records had been found. It contained information about the accident, but nothing that allowed us to contact your biological relatives. We were told the case had been closed.”
“Did you keep that letter?”
She nodded.
“Your father placed it in a box with your adoption papers. I still have it at home.”
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“At first, we thought you were too young. Then we waited for the right time. Every year, it became harder to explain. We were afraid you would think we had stolen you. We were afraid you would leave us.”
