“Then, one night, we heard about a little girl who had been found after a terrible accident. She was frightened, injured, and had no one who could identify her.”
I listened without interrupting.
“We visited you in the hospital. You were so small. You hardly spoke, and you cried whenever someone tried to move you. But when I held you, you wrapped your little fingers around mine.”
Her voice broke.
“I fell in love with you that day.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“What happened to my biological family?”
“We asked the authorities to find them. They told us that they had searched, but the records were confusing. We were given permission to proceed with the adoption because no one had come forward to claim you.”
She looked at the photograph again.
“Your father and I believed that giving you a stable home was the best thing we could do.”
“Did you ever learn my real name?”
