A pair of red shoes.
My own childish voice announcing, with absolute confidence, that grown-up ladies needed shoes but little girls could run faster without them.
I pressed my fingers against my mouth.
“I remember saying that.”
Margaret nodded.
“You said it right here, in this room. You were running so fast that you knocked over a basket of laundry.”
Richard let out a small, broken laugh.
“Your mother laughed so hard she could hardly stand.”
For a few moments, the room felt almost ordinary.
Then I looked at the clock.
“Why did you choose midnight?”
Richard’s expression changed.
“Because midnight was when we received the telephone call about the accident.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“Every year, on the anniversary, I stay awake until midnight. I know it sounds foolish, but I always hope that this time the phone will ring with different news.”
Her voice became very small.
“That someone will tell me Catherine is alive. That someone will tell me my little Emmy has been found.”
