The old rabbit lay between us.
I touched its faded ribbon.
“Why did you ask me to take off my shoes?”
Richard sat in the chair opposite us.
“Because of a small detail Margaret remembered from the last evening she saw you.”
He opened a wooden box that had been hidden beneath the bed.
Inside lay a pair of tiny red shoes.
They were old and worn, but someone had carefully preserved them.
I stared at them.
Richard smiled sadly.
“Catherine bought them for you. She had a matching pair of red heels for herself. You were fascinated by them because you wanted to look like your mother.”
Margaret laughed softly through her tears.
“You kept trying to walk in her shoes. You were too little, so you would take them off and run around the house barefoot.”
I touched the little shoes.
A fragment of memory returned.
A woman bending over me.
