“Thank you,” I said.
He continued down the carriage.
I turned back toward the window, hoping that would finally be the end of it.
For nearly ten minutes, Lucas behaved.
Then his travel bag slid across the floor and into the space near my feet.
I nudged it back toward him.
“Could you keep your bag on your side, please?”
He moved it with an irritated sigh.
A few minutes later, his shoulder pressed against mine again.
I turned toward him.
“You heard what Curtis said.”
Lucas smiled without looking at me.
“What are you going to do? Report me every time I move?”
Something about that question changed the way I saw the entire situation.
Until then, I had been treating each incident as though it were separate. A shoulder brushing mine. A bag sliding into my space. Another mocking comment.
But there was a pattern.
He would behave when someone in authority was present, then start again when that person walked away.
