My mother stopped arranging the plates when I told her about the incident report.
“You actually stood your ground?”
“I did.”
“And you didn’t apologize?”
“Not once.”
She put down the serving spoon and looked at me with a smile that made me feel like a child again.
“Well, that’s a birthday gift I wasn’t expecting.”
I laughed.
Then my smile faded a little.
“Can I tell you something, though?”
“Of course.”
“I nearly gave up my seat just to avoid another argument. I was so embarrassed that people were looking at us. Part of me wanted to get up and move somewhere else.”
My mother pulled out a chair.
“Why didn’t you?”
I thought about the question.
“Because I realized I hadn’t done anything wrong. I had paid for that seat, and I had asked him politely to respect my space. I didn’t think I should have to leave just because he refused.”
