Then Dad smiled.
“Now, tell us about that trip you’ve been planning.”
I laughed.
“I haven’t booked anything yet.”
Mom leaned forward.
“Then let’s help you plan it.”
I pulled out my phone and opened a map.
We spent the next hour talking about places I wanted to visit, restaurants I wanted to try, and things I’d always postponed because I was busy making everyone else happy.
At one point, my phone buzzed again.
Another message from Kai.
KAI: I know I don’t deserve it, but I’d like to take you out for coffee sometime. No favors. No excuses. Just brothers.
I read it twice.
Then I put my phone facedown.
Dad raised an eyebrow.
“Kai?”
“Yes.”
“Are you going to answer?”
“Eventually.”
Mom smiled.
“That’s fair.”
I looked at the cake.
For years, I had believed that winning meant finally getting Kai’s approval.
Then I’d believed winning meant making him feel the pain he’d caused me.
