My Birthday, One Year Later
On my thirty-fifth birthday, I woke up to a message from Kai.
KAI: Happy birthday, little brother. I remembered this time.
I stared at the screen.
Then I smiled faintly.
It wasn’t forgiveness.
But it was a small thing.
And small things, I was learning, could be enough to begin again.
That evening, my parents took me to my favorite restaurant.
Mom had ordered a chocolate cake.
Dad had arranged for the staff to bring it out after dinner.
There were no balloons, no giant banners, and no announcement about Kai’s career.
Just a cake with my name written across it.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KEVIN.
I stared at it for a long moment.
Mom touched my shoulder.
“I know it’s just a cake.”
I looked at her.
“No. It’s not.”
Dad cleared his throat.
“We’re proud of you, son.”
I felt my eyes sting.
“Thank you.”
