“Don’t do this.”
“Do what?”
“Make everything ugly.”
I looked at my brother for a long moment.
“You kissed my wife, lied to my face, and now you’re upset about the atmosphere?”
Molly started sobbing.
“Kevin, please. I never wanted to hurt you.”
I looked at her.
“Then you had a remarkably strange way of showing it.”
She wiped her cheeks.
“I was confused.”
“About what?”
“About us. About my feelings.”
“Did you become confused before or after you wrapped your arms around my brother?”
She had no answer.
Kai stepped between us.
“Enough. This isn’t helping anybody.”
I almost applauded.
My brother, who had never once stopped to consider my feelings, had suddenly become the family counselor.
“What was the announcement?” I asked.
He looked startled.
“What?”
“Your big announcement. The one you wanted to make tonight.”
Molly shut her eyes.
Kai glanced at her.
Then he said, “We were going to tell everyone that we’d fallen in love.”
