She turned toward me.
“This is what you wanted, isn’t it? You’ve been waiting for the day my son would turn against me.”
I could have listed every insult she had delivered over twelve years.
I could have reminded her of every holiday she had spoiled and every time she had made me feel unwelcome in a family I had tried so hard to join.
Instead, I said, “I came here tonight because I thought someone was taking advantage of you. Even after everything between us, I was worried about your safety. I never imagined you were the one arranging all of this.”
Margaret looked away.
Tessa was nowhere to be seen.
Roy glanced toward the hallway.
“Where is she?”
“She left,” Margaret muttered.
“Then we’ll speak to her tomorrow.”
Margaret’s head snapped up.
“No! You don’t need to involve anyone else. We can settle this as a family.”
Roy shook his head.
