Then she turned toward me.
“I suppose you’ve finally gotten what you wanted. First, you took my son away from me. Now you’re trying to take away the only person who cares about me.”
I kept my voice calm.
“I am not trying to take anyone away from you. I am trying to make sure you’re safe.”
“Then prove it. Let me move in with you.”
Roy opened his mouth, but I spoke first.
“We’ll help you find the right care. But moving into our house cannot be a punishment you threaten us with whenever we disagree.”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“I see who’s been whispering in your ear.”
I looked at Roy.
He looked at the carpet.
There it was again. His mother’s favorite weapon, and his oldest weakness.
We left without making any decisions.
Outside, the evening air was cool.
Roy rubbed the back of his neck.
“Maybe she really does need more help than we’ve realized.”
