I leaned forward.
“We can help arrange a professional caregiver. Someone who can visit regularly, help with the house, and make sure you’re safe.”
Margaret looked at me as if I had slapped her.
“A caregiver?”
“Someone qualified.”
“So now you want to put me in the hands of a stranger?”
“That isn’t what I said.”
She dabbed her eyes with a tissue.
“Fine. If Tessa isn’t welcome here anymore, perhaps I’ll just move in with you and Roy.”
My stomach tightened.
“Margaret, we haven’t said that.”
“Why not? I’m his mother. I raised him alone. I sacrificed everything for him, and now I’m supposed to sit here while his wife decides who is allowed to help me?”
Roy shifted in his chair.
“Mom, we need to discuss the options. We can’t make a decision like that tonight.”
“Options?” She stared at him. “I’m your mother, Roy. I shouldn’t have to beg my own son for a place to live.”
