THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
That same night, a fire started near the coffee warehouse.
Flames climbed rapidly.
Workers rushed to save the sacks of coffee.
Joaquim shouted orders.
Then he saw something.
The fire was not spreading naturally.
Someone had poured oil near the wooden wall.
It had been deliberate.
Álvaro.
He had been watching Benedita for months.
He wanted the secret.
And he knew Joaquim would never sell her.
So he decided to destroy the plantation and force Joaquim into debt.
The fire reached the main storage building.
Benedita ran toward it.
“Don’t!” Joaquim shouted.
But she disappeared inside.
Seconds passed.
Then ten.
Then twenty.
“BENEDITA!”
Smoke filled the doorway.
Suddenly, a section of the roof collapsed.
Everyone screamed.
Joaquim tried to run inside.
Three workers held him back.
“You’ll die!”
Then they heard something.
A deep cracking sound.
And through the smoke came Benedita.
She was carrying a wooden box.
Not coffee.
Not money.
Papers.
Documents.
Joaquim’s records.
Land papers.
Debt records.
And something else.
A small leather pouch.
She handed it to Joaquim.
“What is this?”
“Your father’s letters.”
Joaquim froze.
He had believed those letters were lost years ago.
“How did you find them?”
“In the office.”
She smiled weakly.
“They were hidden behind the wall.”
