A Farmer Bought a Giant Slave for Seven Cents… No One Imagined What He Would Do With Her

BENEDITA HEARD EVERYTHING

She had been standing behind the stable door.

She heard every word.

That night, she confronted Joaquim.

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why won’t you sell me?”

Joaquim sat silently for a moment.

Then he said:

“Because you’re not a machine.”

She looked away.

“Everyone says I am.”

“Everyone is wrong.”

“You don’t know me.”

“I know enough.”

“You bought me.”

Joaquim lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“You paid for me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why treat me differently?”

He looked directly at her.

“Because buying you was wrong.”

Benedita stared at him.

No one had ever said those words to her.

Not a plantation owner.

Not an overseer.

Not an auctioneer.

No one.

Joaquim continued:

“I cannot change what happened before you came here.”

“But I can decide what happens next.”

Benedita’s eyes filled with tears.

For the first time in many years, she cried without trying to hide it.
