An entitled woman kicked my son’s sandcastle into the ocean because it “”ruined her view””—twenty minutes later, the lifeguard walked straight toward her carrying a golden box. My nine-year-old son, Noah, used to build sandcastles with his dad every summer. While other kids splashed in the waves, the two of them would spend hours building enormous kingdoms with moats, seashell towers, and tiny flags. Last October, my husband d:ied in a construction ac:cident. From that day on, Noah stopped smiling. The only time I saw a spark return to his eyes was when he quietly asked, “”Mom… do you think Dad can still see the sandcastles I build for him?”” I burst into tears. So this Fourth of July, I took him back to the same beach. For three straight hours, he carefully built the biggest castle we’d ever made. When he finally finished, he pulled a tiny American flag from his backpack. “”I’m putting it on the highest tower,”” he whispered. “”It’s for Dad.”” Before he could place it… a woman marched straight across the sand. Designer sunglasses. Phone already recording herself. She walked toward the shoreline, looked at our castle, and frowned “”This thing ruins the view from my beach blanket.”” Before I could react, she swung her leg and kicked straight through the tallest tower. Then another. Then another. One kick sent the entire castle sliding into the waves. Noah just stood there. Holding the little American flag he’d been about to place on the highest tower. His lip trembled. “”But…”” he whispered. “”I built it for my dad.”” The woman rolled her eyes. “”It’s just sand.”” I wrapped my arms around my son while he cried into my shoulder. About twenty minutes later, a shrill whistle echoed across the beach. Everyone turned. A senior lifeguard was walking directly toward the woman. In his hands was a golden box tied with a navy ribbon. He smiled politely. “”Excuse me, ma’am,”” he said. “”Congratulations.”” “”You’ve just been selected for today’s special beach presentation.”” Her face lit up. She reached eagerly for the box.
