What Is Zoophilia? A Psychological Perspective

The term zoophilia generally refers to sexual interest in animals. It is often discussed in public using insulting labels, jokes, or assumptions about a person’s character. Clinical discussions require more precise language.
Psychologists and psychiatrists distinguish between an unusual sexual interest, a persistent pattern of sexual arousal, and a diagnosable mental disorder. These are not automatically the same thing.
A single reported incident does not establish that someone has a persistent sexual interest in animals. Nor does it establish a psychiatric diagnosis.
A proper assessment would consider the person’s history, the nature and persistence of any sexual interests, their mental state, possible distress or impairment, and the risk of harm to others. It would also examine whether the reported incident actually occurred as described.
This matters because human behavior can be complicated, and several different circumstances can appear similar to an outside observer.
