No answer.
She knocked on the front door.
Duke barked from inside.
“Vanessa, open the door!”
Still nothing.
Mrs. Henderson called Vanessa’s phone. She could hear it ringing somewhere inside the house, but nobody answered.
That was when she noticed something else.
The dog wasn’t behaving like an animal guarding its territory.
He was running back and forth, stopping to look toward the kitchen, then returning to the front door as if begging someone to follow him.
Mrs. Henderson called emergency services.
Within minutes, an ambulance arrived, followed by two police officers.
The officers approached the house cautiously. They had been told that a large dog might be involved in a medical emergency.
When they entered, Duke stood in the hallway, trembling.
“Easy, boy,” one officer said.
Duke barked once and ran toward the kitchen.
The officers followed.
They found Vanessa lying unconscious on the floor.
One officer immediately called for the paramedics, while the other carefully kept Duke from crowding the doorway.
