“Nothing, probably. Duke is acting strange. He’s been barking at the kitchen and won’t settle down.”
Daniel laughed.
“Maybe he’s hungry.”
“He ate an hour ago.”
“Then take him for a walk. You know how dramatic he gets.”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Yeah. Maybe you’re right.”
She ended the call.
Then she stood up too quickly.
The room seemed to tilt.
She grabbed the kitchen counter and closed her eyes, waiting for the dizziness to pass.
She had skipped lunch and spent most of the day staring at her computer. Perhaps she was simply exhausted.
But when she tried to walk toward the living room, her legs felt strangely weak.
Duke rushed to her side.
“I’m okay,” she whispered, reaching for his collar.
She wasn’t.
A heavy feeling settled over her body. Her thoughts became slow, and the walls seemed to move farther away.
She tried to reach her phone.
It slipped from her fingers and struck the floor.
