He had never shown aggression toward her. In fact, he became visibly uncomfortable whenever she cried.
That was why what happened on Thursday night made no sense to anyone who knew them.
At approximately nine o’clock, Vanessa returned from the grocery store carrying two bags. Duke greeted her at the door, wagging his tail so vigorously that his entire body seemed to move with it.
“Easy, giant boy,” she laughed, setting the bags on the kitchen counter. “You’re going to knock me into next week.”
Duke pressed his enormous head against her chest.
She scratched behind his ears.
“Someone missed me.”
He suddenly pulled away and stared toward the kitchen.
Vanessa followed his gaze.
“What is it?”
Duke sniffed the air, whined, and walked toward the back of the house.
She thought he had heard something outside.
“Probably a cat,” she muttered.
She continued unpacking the groceries, unaware that Duke had begun pacing between the kitchen and the hallway.
