There was nothing about this childhood photograph that could tell you what his future would become.

Decades later, this boy would become one of the most recognizable people in America.

His name was Donald John Trump.

Born in Queens, New York, in 1946, Trump grew up in a wealthy family. His father, Fred Trump, was a successful real-estate developer, and Donald was the fourth of five children.

But according to people who knew him as a child, he wasn’t exactly the quiet kid sitting unnoticed in the corner.

Former classmates described him as energetic, competitive and headstrong.

At Kew-Forest School, he reportedly got into trouble often enough that classmates developed their own nickname for detention because of how frequently he was there.

Then, when Donald was 13, his father made a major decision.

He sent him away to the New York Military Academy, a strict boarding school in upstate New York.

It was a dramatic change for a boy accustomed to life with his family in Queens.

The military academy imposed discipline, inspections, curfews and a completely different daily routine.
