Wings Over Solitude

Halfway through the three-hour journey, the senior flight attendant, Clara, knocked on the cockpit door and stepped inside holding a tray with two fresh cups of coffee. Clara had worked with Elena on several long-haul routes over the past three years and held deep respect for the captain’s quiet strength and flawless safety record. Clara offered a gentle, knowing smile as she handed Elena her mug, noticing the reflective look in the pilot’s eyesClara mentioned that a young passenger sitting in row twelve had noticed the captain’s name listed on the flight board before boarding and had handed the cabin crew a folded drawing on a paper napkin. Elena unfolded the napkin carefully. On it was a crude but detailed drawing of a large commercial airplane soaring over a rainbow, written in colorful crayon with the words: “To Captain Elena, thank you for showing me that girls can fly the biggest planes!”
