The Next Time Your Dog Stops to Sniff, Don’t Be So Quick to Pull the Leash
After learning all of this, I started noticing something I had never really appreciated before.
My dog wasn’t wasting time when he stopped to sniff.
He was doing something completely natural.
For humans, walking is often about getting somewhere.
For dogs, the journey itself can be an investigation.
A tree isn’t just a tree.
A sidewalk isn’t just a sidewalk.
A patch of grass isn’t just grass.
Each place can contain odors left behind by animals, people, food, plants, and the environment.
And your dog has a sensory system built specifically to investigate those clues.
That’s why giving a dog reasonable opportunities to sniff can be a form of enrichment. AKC guidance emphasizes that sniffing helps dogs gather information and can provide mental stimulation.
Of course, that doesn’t mean your dog should be allowed to sniff absolutely everything.
You still need to consider safety, traffic, harmful substances, other animals, and other people’s comfort.
And if your dog becomes obsessive about sniffing or suddenly develops a dramatic change in behavior, it’s worth discussing the change with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.
But ordinary sniffing?
That’s part of being a dog.
So now, when my dog walks over and investigates my hand, I don’t look at him and think:
“Why are you doing that?”
I think:
“What did your nose just discover?”
Because while I’m looking at the world with my eyes…
My dog is experiencing a completely different version of it.
A world made partly of invisible trails, familiar scents, new smells, and tiny chemical clues that I will probably never be able to detect.
And perhaps that’s the most amazing thing about living with a dog.
Sometimes, our dogs aren’t acting strangely at all.
We’re simply seeing the world through human eyes.
One last thing…
The next time your dog stops during a walk and spends several seconds sniffing one tiny spot, try not to rush him immediately.
You may not understand what he’s investigating.
But to him, there may be an entire story waiting there.
And his nose is reading it.
