Your Dog’s Nose Is Reading a World You Can’t See
Think about what happens when you meet a friend.
You look at their face.
You hear their voice.
You might notice their clothes or whether they’ve been outside.
Your dog doesn’t need any of that.
A dog can pick up information from tiny differences in scent that are completely invisible to us.
That’s one reason dogs naturally investigate people, animals, objects, and places with their noses.
When a dog sniffs your hand, for example, it may encounter a mixture of odors from your skin, your environment, other people or animals you’ve encountered, food, plants, and countless other sources.
To us, that may simply smell like…
a person.
To a dog, it’s much more complicated.
It’s a collection of individual scent clues.
Dogs have specialized anatomy that helps them process these odors, including a highly developed olfactory system and a vomeronasal organ, sometimes called Jacobson’s organ, that is involved in detecting chemical signals such as pheromones.
And there’s another fascinating detail.
Dogs don’t simply take one quick sniff and immediately know everything.
They often sniff repeatedly because they’re gathering and processing information.
That’s why you’ll sometimes see a dog stop during a walk and spend what seems like an eternity investigating one tiny patch of grass.
You may see…
nothing.
Your dog may be reading an entire story.
Another animal passed through.
Someone walked by.
Food was dropped.
Another dog left a scent.
Something changed.
To your eyes, it’s just grass.
To your dog, it’s information.
This also explains why sniffing isn’t something you should always rush your dog through.
Sniffing provides mental stimulation and is one of the natural ways dogs explore their environment. Allowing appropriate opportunities to sniff during walks can be enriching for them.
