Why Such a Small Amount Works
There is also a behavioral reason the system works so well.
People dislike losing something they already consider theirs.
A quarter is a tiny amount of money, but after putting it into the cart, shoppers have a small incentive to retrieve it.
Without the deposit, returning a cart offers almost no immediate personal reward.
With the deposit, there is one.
It is essentially a simple form of behavioral design: make the desired action slightly more rewarding and people are more likely to do it voluntarily.
No employee needs to remind you.
No penalty needs to be issued.
The cart itself provides the incentive.
What Happens If You Don’t Have a Quarter?
This is probably the most common problem for first-time Aldi shoppers.
If you arrive without a quarter, you still have options.
Depending on the store, an employee may be able to help you obtain one or provide another solution. Some shoppers also simply exchange money with another customer.
Regular Aldi customers often keep a dedicated quarter in the car so they never have to think about it.
Reusable cart tokens designed to fit similar mechanisms also exist, although compatibility can vary.
And if you’re only buying a few items, you may not need a cart at all.
