I gripped the edge of the table.
“Being pregnant doesn’t give you the right to insult me.”
“Insult you? I’m telling you the truth. Kelly deserves to be a father. He deserves a woman who can give him a family.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
“You have no idea what I have been through.”
“Oh, I know enough. Kelly told me everything. The hospital visits. The failed treatments. The crying every month. He told me how tired he was of pretending he was happy.”
Each sentence felt like a knife.
Kelly had shared my most private pain with the woman he was sleeping with.
The hospital visits I had discussed with him in confidence had become gossip between them.
The tears I had cried against his chest had become evidence that I was somehow unworthy of being his wife.
Then Nonye said the words I would never forget.
