“I cannot undo what my son has done. But I want you to know that I never believed you deserved those insults.”
Tears gathered in my eyes.
“Thank you, Mama.”
She squeezed my fingers.
“Whatever you decide about the marriage, don’t make the decision because you think you owe us a child.”
Those words stayed with me long after she left.
A few days later, Nonye contacted me.
She asked whether we could meet.
At first, I refused.
Then she sent a message explaining that she wanted to apologize in person.
I agreed to meet her in a public place.
When she arrived, she looked different. Her confidence had disappeared, replaced by exhaustion and embarrassment.
She sat across from me and kept her hands folded over her stomach.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me,” she began.
“Then why did you ask to see me?”
“Because I need to tell you the truth about something.”
