I wasn’t leaving because I had failed as a wife.
I was leaving because I needed to be safe enough to think clearly.
When Kelly discovered I had gone, he called repeatedly.
I ignored the first few calls.
Then a message arrived.
Ella, please come home. We need to talk.
Another followed.
I know I made mistakes, but you are still my wife.
I stared at the screen.
For years, those words would have been enough to make me return.
I would have believed his apologies, cooked his favorite meal, and convinced myself that love meant giving him another chance.
But something had changed.
I finally understood that forgiveness and reconciliation were not the same thing.
I could eventually forgive him without returning to a marriage where I was afraid to speak.
I could love the memories we had shared without pretending that his recent actions were acceptable.
And I could still want a child without believing that a baby would solve every problem in my life.
